Chris Hemsworth Talks Fat Thor and His Fight to Keep Him in Avengers: Endgame

Thor’s new look from Avengers: Endgame has been in the minds of Marvel Cinematic Universe fans for over a month now. For the most part, the new look has been met with positivity from MCU fans, but there have been more than a few people who have accused Marvel Studios of fat-shaming. Whatever the case may be, the Russo Brothers, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, and Chris Hemsworth have stood behind the decision, noting it was a symptom of depression, making the God of Thunder more relatable. Hemsworth ended up fighting to keep Thor that way throughout the entire movie.

Chris Hemsworth says, “I enjoyed that version of Thor,” in Avengers: Endgame. “It was so different than any other way I played the character. And then it took on a life of its own,” says the actor, which is why he fought to keep him that way the entire time. Hemsworth has publicly admitted he was pretty much over playing the God of Thunder on the big screen until he worked with Taika Waititi on Thor: Ragnarok. Since then, we’ve only seen the character continue to grow and evolve in new and unexpected ways.

Part of Thor’s journey in Endgame was a path of self-destruction after Thanos admitted to destroying the Infinity Stones. The Russo Brothers had the character shifting back to his regular look at some point down the line and Chris Hemsworth wasn’t having it. He enjoyed playing that version of the character so much he committed to three hours in the makeup chair with a lot more. He explains.

“Physically, it was a good three hours in hair and makeup. Then the prosthetic suit, particularly for the shirt-off scene, that was a big silicone that weighed about 90 pounds. It was certainly exhausting. I had weights on my hands and ankles just to have my arms and legs swing differently when I shuffled along through the set.”

MCU fans were also happy not to see some sort of montage scene of Thor getting back in shape to go up against Thanos again. The set of Endgame changed quite a bit from that point on, with co-star Robert Downey Jr. noting that Chris Hemsworth may have gone off the deep end while portraying Lebowski Thor. However, Hemsworth has a different view on the experience. He had this to say.

“People just kept coming up and cuddling me like a big bear or rubbing my belly like I was pregnant. Or trying to sit on my lap like I was Santa Claus. You get a lot of affection. I felt like an old man, an old grandpa, with a bunch of kids around. And then you get sick of it when people come up and grab your belly. ‘Don’t grab me like that!’ I know how my wife felt when strangers would come up and rub her belly.”

The Russo Brothers started to worry about Chris Hemsworth’s health while he was shooting action scenes in his new larger body. The actor committed so hard that he was starting to get back pain from carrying around nearly 100 pounds of extra weight. Thankfully, the actor didn’t suffer any long-term effects from his acting gig.
