From fighting off a stage invader to dodgy live performances and breaking records with Beyoncé: A look back at Adele’s highs and lows at the Grammys

For years Adele has been one of the Grammy Awards darlings.

Since releasing her first album in 2009, Adele has been nominated a whopping 25 times and has walked away with 16 Golden Gramophones.

Her latest triumph came during Sunday’s ceremony where she cinched Best Pop Solo Performance for Easy On Me.

There has never been a dull moment where the star is concerned, whether it be because she’s grappled with a stage invader or attempted to turn down an award during her acceptance speech.

Now we take a look back at the highs and lows of Adele’s Grammy experiences through the years.

Shortly after releasing her debut album, 19, Adele scored four nominees, including Record and Song of the Year for Chasing Pavements, although she lost in those categories to Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, and Coldplay.

She picked up her first two gongs for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal performance for Chasing Pavements.

She instantly won over audiences when she took to the stage for her acceptance speech, chewing gum and fighting back tears.

She said of her fellow nominees: ‘Duffy, I love you, I think you’re amazing. Jonas Brothers, I love you as well.’

When speaking about how she’d celebrate her win, Adele revealed: ‘Usually I’d have a whole bottle of champagne, but I’ve stopped drinkin’, so I’m going to have a Coca-Cola and a few cigarettes, just chill out and call my mum.’

The Recording Academy recognised Adele the following years when she was nominated in Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for Hometown Glory.

Adele’s breakthrough song, written when she was 16, had originally been released in 2007 but failed to chart.

Following mass downloads of the song during the release week of her debut album, Hometown Glory was rereleased, eventually peaking at 19 on the singles chart.

Despite being nominated, Adele did not attend the ceremony and lost out on the award, which went to Beyoncé for Halo.

It was Adele’s time to shine in 2012 when she bounced back from vocal cord surgery to release her critically acclaimed second album, 21.

She picked up all six of the awards she had been nominated for, scooping Album, Record and Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Short Form Music Video.

The move saw her level with Beyoncé for most trophies won in one night by a female artist.

As she tearfully accepted album of the year, Adele told the star-studded crowd: ‘It’s been the most life-changing year.’

She went on to pay tribute to her mother Penny Adkins, exclaiming: ‘I just want to say, mum, your girl did good!’

Three years after releasing her single Set Fire to the Rain, Adele found herself nominated but for a live performance of the hit at Royal Albert Hall.

Adele won but as she went to accept the award the music world was left in shock at the arrival of a bizarre prankster.

Ukrainian presenter Vitalii Sediuk stormed the stage when Adele was announced as Best Solo Performance, attempting to grab the award from shocked presenters  Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull.

The award came shortly after Adele welcomed her son Angelo with ex Simon Konecki, telling reporters backstage: ‘I haven’t been as stressed out. In life you have to prioritize what you stress about and worry about when you have a child.’

Adele opted to skip the 2014 Grammys ceremony to focus on spending time with son Angelo, then 15 months.

Her absence didn’t stop her from winning, however, and she scooped Best Song Written for Visual Media with her James Bond theme, Skyfall.

She watched the ceremony from home and took to Twitter to share her gratitude at scoring another gong.

‘Wish I was there! Thank you for the grammy! (My 10th one! Whhaaa?)’ she penned.  ‘Have a wonderful night. I’m in bed, now feeling very restless x’

While her latest album 25 had been critically acclaimed, it was released too late in the year to qualify for the 2016 Grammys.

While she wasn’t eligible to be nominated, the singer still made an appearance at the ceremony, performing All I Ask.

However, the performance was plagued with technical issues, prompting Adele to later tweet:  ‘The piano mics fell on to the piano strings, that’s what the guitar sound was. It made it sound out of tune. S**t happens. X’

She later told Ellen DeGeneres: ‘I heard it straightaway and I wanted to turn. I knew what it was because in rehearsal on Saturday they were like, “We’re going to double mic the piano just in case one doesn’t work,” and I knew where the mic was and I wanted to turn around and lift it up, but I froze.’

Now that her album 25 was eligible for nominations she managed to score five, including Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album, while lead single Hello won Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.

The songstress also made headlines with her two performances at the 2017 ceremony.

She opened the show with Hello before returning for a stripped-down rendition of George Michael’s Fastlove in tribute to the late artist.

After flubbing her words, Adele abruply halted the performance and asked to restart, telling the shocked audience: ‘I know it’s live TV, I’m so sorry, I f**ked up, I can’t do it again like last year.’

She also had an outburst after beating Beyonce’s Lemonade in the Album Of The Year category.

The shocked singer said:  ‘I can’t possibly accept this award and I’m very humbled and I’m very grateful but the artist of my life is Beyonce.

‘This album to me, the Lemonade album was just so monumental and so well thought out and so beautiful and soul baring.

‘The way you make me and my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel is so empowering. I love you. I always have and I always will.’

While Adele may only have won one of the seven Grammys she was nominated for: Best Pop Solo Performance for Easy On Me, she appeared as delighted as ever.

During her emotional acceptance speech, she rushed to thank her 10-year-old son Angelo and boyfriend Rich Paul for their support as she created her album 30.

30 marked Adele’s first album in six years – which she began working on in early 2019 after announcing the end of her marriage to Simon.

After Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson called her onto the stage, the Hello hitmaker said: ‘I really was just looking forward to coming tonight. I just want to dedicate this to my son Angelo.’

She continued: ‘I wrote this first verse in the shower when I was choosing to change my son’s life, and he’s been nothing but humble and gracious and loving to me the whole time.’

The superstar then admitted her man, who she began dating in May 2021, ‘said don’t cry’ if she wins, before joking about being unable to follow his advise as tears welled in her eyes.
