One Piece: Oda Reveals The Source Of Sanji’s Power In SBS Vol. 105

Oda finally confirms how Sanji’s powers work in the latest One Piece Volume.

The SBS corner is one of the most interesting parts of One Piece. At the end of each volume, Oda answers some questions that the fans pose to him. While most of the times these questions are jokes, at other times, they reveal important bits of information. As such, one can never truly predict what Oda will answer in his SBS corner and the excitement for it is perpetual.

With the release of One Piece volume 105, Oda has tackled some very interesting topics related to Sanji and his eyebrows. At the same time, he slightly touched up on the source of his powers, and while he did not reveal that in full, it gave fans enough of an idea to figure out what the true source of Sanji’s power really is.

The Birth Of Sanji

To understand the source of the powers that Sanji possesses, one needs to look at his very birth. Sanji is the son of Vinsmoke Judge and Sora. Sora was pregnant with quadruplets and all of them were genetically modified by Judge, who was a former Scientist of MADS. During his time in MADS, he discovered the secret to life itself along with Dr. Vegapunk, and this was the Lineage Factor. The Lineage Factor is essentially the DNA of the people in the world of One Piece. By altering this Lineage Factor, anything could be achieved. As such, Judge altered the DNA of his children to give them incredible powers and make them the strongest war machines to further his goals.

Sora was against this and wanted her children to be born human, above all with emotions and humanity. So, she took a drug to reverse the effects of Judge’s alterations. Unfortunately, this drug did not work on three of her children, however, Sanji, for some reason, was spared. When compared to his siblings, Sanji was born a normal child and, it is for this reason that Judge hated him and branded him a failure.

The Awakening Of His Latent Powers

In the Wano Country arc, Oda gave new power-ups to nearly all the members of the Straw Hat Pirates and this also included Sanji. After putting on the Raid Suit for the third time, Sanji felt something change in his body. Soon after, he started developing an exoskeleton, which is akin to what his siblings were born with. What’s more, he gained an incredibly high regeneration factor, along with more muscle mass and overall, became much better at combat, akin to a war machine. It was evident that Sanji was starting to become more like his family and Oda addressed this in the recent SBS corner.

When asked about why Sanji’s eyebrows went back to their old self after his fight against Queen, Oda replied that the eyebrows of all the Germa made a 66 pattern simply because of the genetic alterations down to their bodies. Sanji got similar eyebrows when his latent genetic alterations started taking effect during his fight against Queen. Oda went on to explain that they awakened in the first place because of his Raid suit that he put on three times during the Wano arc. However, the key bit of information that Oda dropped in this SBS was about Sanji’s resistance to heat.

The Source Of Diable Jambe

Sanji has always been very resistant to fire. This goes back to even the Baratie where Sanji openly claimed that a cook cannot be afraid of fire. Throughout the majority of the story, Sanji has never fallen to a fire-based attack. In fact, he has always used fire as a weapon itself. In the Enies Lobby arc, Sanji awakened the power of Diable Jambe. This technique allowed him to set his foot on fire without actually hurting him. When Oda was asked about this in the past, he mentioned that this was simply due to the fact that his soul burned even hotter so the flames did not have an effect on him.

However, now, Oda has finally revealed that it was due to his genetic alterations that Sanji is this resistant to fire. This means that Sanji’s genetic alterations started to manifest even before the timeskip. During his fight against Jabra, they showed for the very first time and allowed him to use the powers of Diable Jambe. After this fight, they only continued to grow and eventually, when he put on the Raid Suit, the other alterations that were done to him before being born also started to show. What exactly the source of these flames is, remains to be seen. There have been connections drawn to the Lunarians’ ability to manipulate fire and Sanji could very well be genetically predisposed to their powers. Oda went on to imply that there will be key developments about Sanji’s powers in the future as well.
