James Milner struggles to hold back emotions after playing final Liverpool home game

Liverpool veteran James Milner played his final game at Anfield for the club after a glittering career with the Reds which saw him lift the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup

James Milner struggled to hold back his emotions after receiving a guard of honour in his final game for Liverpool.

The 37-year-old was brought on with 20 minutes to go in the 1-1 draw against Aston Villa to a raucous reception by the Anfield faithful. It marked the Englishman’s final appearance at home after a fantastic eight-year spell with the Reds, with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

He received a guard of honour from his teammates following the final whistle, after which he appeared visibly emotional.

Milner was applauded by the Liverpool players, staff and fans before being presented with several plaques. And the midfielder looked down with a glimmer of sadness after being embraced by manager Jurgen Klopp.

He told BBC Sport after the match: “It was a special moment. I’ve been lucky to have a pretty good time here. It is a special place., I might play here again, who knows.

“The trophy Liverpool always wanted was the league title and to leave after eight years and have done that, it’s what you hope happens.

“I’ve had an unbelievable time here. I’m content. Happy with the job and the team I’ve been a part of and the success we’ve contributed to the club’s history.

“One more game to go, it would be nice to finish with a win. I’ve been available most of the year, I’ve contributed and I still feel good. Age is just a number.”

He joined by fellow substitute Roberto Firmino in playing their last games for Liverpool as club legends. Firmino had broken down in tears after having his name belted out by the Kop.

Yet Milner’s 330th appearance for the Reds is not expected to be his last in English football. The three-time Premier League winner and twice FA Cup winner has been linked with a move to Brighton ahead of next season.
