One Piece: Jaguar D. Saul’s Role In The Final Saga, Explained

Jaguar D. Saul seemed like a minor character when he was first introduced, but he might play a bigger role as the series winds down.

Almost every character in One Piece has been used by Oda to further the plot. The author has always made it a point to not introduce characters that have no significance to the plot. With One Piece entering the final saga, it is more important than ever to have a short cast that will be involved in the story.

The Egghead arc is the first arc in the final saga, and so far many mysteries have been unraveled in the story. One of the biggest revelations in the arc was the confirmation of Saul being alive, and it could have a massive impact on the story down the line.

Ending Up On Ohara

Jaguar D. Saul used to be a Navy Vice Admiral, but after learning about loathsome plans, he deserted them. Saul tried to get away from the violence, but he ended up on the shores of Ohara. For quite some time, Saul was unaware that he had landed on Ohara. He befriended Nico Robin and taught her a lot of valuable lessons. By the time he found his current location, it was too late. The Navy had already arrived, and they were in the process of gathering all the scholars who had broken the law.

The civilians were taken on the ship, but before they could reach a safe location, Akainu ordered the vessel to be blown to smithereens. Meanwhile, on Ohara, Aokiji found Robin, but he was stopped by Saul. Aokiji defeated the former Vice Admiral without any problem. However, seeing his commitment, Saul allowed Robin to go free. Considering the situation Saul was in, he was presumed dead by everyone.

The Big Shock

In the Egghead Island arc, the Straw Hats met Dr. Vegapunk, who is considered the smartest mind in the world. Shaka, one of Vegapunk’s satellites, revealed that the main body actually met Saul after the destruction of Ohara. Saul and a few giants dug up the books that the scholars tried to save before their impending deaths. Saul was covered in bandages, which implies that he was hurt.

Shaka also confirmed that Saul left Ohara and traveled to Elbaf along with the books. There is no doubt that these books hold a great deal of significance, and they might even contain information about the Void Century and the other secrets of the world. For a long time, it has been rumored that the Straw Hats will sail to Elbaf, and if they do, it would be absolutely monumental.

Access to Forbidden Knowledge

Bearing in mind that Saul has had the books in his possession for several decades, it makes sense for him to read them and learn whatever is written in them. This makes Saul an important character, and if he imparts this knowledge to someone else, they would become a serious threat to the World Government.

There is also a chance that Saul knows about One Piece and Laugh Tale. This was teased by Eustass Kid back in the Wano Country arc, while he was having a discussion with Killer about their future plans. During their conversation, they mentioned the “man marked by flames,” and according to them, he will give them an advantage in their quest for the One Piece. They also admitted that it would be extremely difficult to find the mystery man. Saul was on an island covered in flames, so it is highly likely that he suffered some serious burns, which is why he was covered in bandages. Another thing that points to Saul is the fact that Kid is en route to Elbaf, and the former has been confirmed to be on the island.

Role In The Series

From the looks of things, it won’t take long for Kid to reach Elbaf. He was seen on the water body outside the nation of giants, and it is plausible to assume that he will land in the upcoming chapters. Knowing Kid, he will not hesitate to attack the giants if they do not disclose Saul’s location. There is a chance that there might be a battle between the two sides, and the odds definitely favor Eustass Kid. It is also possible that Saul might have changed his location and moved elsewhere, although it would be extremely risky to do so.

However, if Saul is still on Elbaf and he tells Kid everything that he knows, then the latter will gain a major advantage over his two rivals, Law and Luffy. If the Straw Hat Pirates also make their way to Elbaf, then fans can expect to see an emotional reunion between Robin and Saul. Robin was in tears after hearing about Saul, so there’s no question that when she meets him in person, emotions will be running high. Saul will prove to be a great help to the Straw Hats. He could potentially tell them the location of Laugh Tale or the final Road Poneglyph. This information will be extremely useful to the Straw Hats, especially to Luffy, who is competing for the One Piece. Once the story reaches Elbaf, fans can expect more details to be revealed about Saul, including how he managed to survive the Buster Call. In any case, fans can expect Saul to play a pivotal role in the final saga of One Piece.
